Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users buying these medications should be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Doctors believe the mechanism of the jabs explains the amplified regain.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Accounts

Users who have come off the medication explain a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Use

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is higher among women than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts caution that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
